The paper explores the role of the Croatian Fraternal Union and its news paper Zajedničar in contributing to the evolution of the ethnic identity of the second generation of Croatian immigrants in the USA. Causes for adecreased CFU membership of the World War One and the strategy of the

CFU leaders to Expand the membership are presented in detail. The study's - besides other sources - largely based upon articles published in Zajedničar between 1928 and 1936.
